Marine Reserve Success Story
Created in June 2004, the Namena Marine reserve
has been very successful through it's strategy of
issuing tags for purchase by dive tourists to the
area which are valid for 12 months through 31st
December each year. The proceeds help to provide
scholarships for the youth of the villages in the
Kubalau district in return for them not fishing
within the reserve.
Moody's Namena, an Eco
Tourism/Diving resort on Namenalala Island off the
coast of SavuSavu(Vanua Levu), reports that they
are already seeing the results with large schools
of sardines returning to the Namena Barrier Reef
which has in turn, attracted larger fish.
The corals are also healthy, prolific and varied
and each month, Moody's notes more people diving
the area and purchasing the tags, in fact 2005 is
on track for double the amount of tags sold in 2004.
